I couldn't resist blogging another picture of Yosemite.
This shot was taken at the top of Half Dome, which is not a technical climb if you go around the back. Still, it's a long day of about 16 miles round trip with a pretty intense final push up the rounded granite of Half Dome's eastern flank.
Cables allow this final climb of about 1/4 mile to be safe, but it's so steep that you feel at times like you are dangling off the edge.
The tip shown here is visible in most views of Half Dome.
The Half Dome hike is a superb adventure. I've done it 23 times. The views and sense of accomplishment are worth it. Folks need to prepare though...it's not a walk-in-the-park. Water, boots, hiking poles and gloves for the cables - and be in top shape!
ReplyDeleteThe cables are 900 ft in length but at a 45 degree angle. You actually go up 425 ft vertically.
The "overhang" is called the Visor.
I've written the ony hiking guide to Half Dome and suggest it for you. It is called "One Best Hike: Yosemite's Half Dome" published by Wilderness Press. See my website. The trick is to train, leave early (5:30 am) and be at the cables before 11 am. They are clogged after that.
